Spicing Up Sales with Chai!
by Dan Olson, National Sales Manager @ Third Street Chai
Don't forget to check out our Drink Profit Calculator.
From the silky froth of the steamed milk on top to the gently wafting aroma of the exotic spices, chai has become the de facto alternative to coffee and a great way to transport your customers on an exotic journey of flavor. Nothing spices up a coffee shop like chai tea and although chai has been around for awhile, there are many new and fun ways to add new excitement to your chai offerings and to drive chai sales – all year long!
What is this Amazing Stuff!?
"Chai" literally means tea in many languages. Chai as we know it is based on the ancient Indian method of preparation, which uses black tea and a mixture of aromatic spices (cardamom, clove, cinnamon, black pepper, fennel, ginger, and nutmeg) and is traditionally consumed with milk. Chai’s complex flavor and tonic spices have been used for centuries to stimulate the senses, invigorate the body, and promote healthy digestion, circulation, and overall well-being.
Spice it Up!
Revive your chai sales by offering something a little more spicy than sweet. Many customers are starting to prefer chais with a spicier flavor profile and sales of ginger-flavored products are on the rise. Third Street Chai offers a Spicy Ginger flavor that adds a healthy ginger kick to their already generously spiced chai teas – providing a unique flavor that your customers will come to crave. Additionally, chai made with fresh-milled, whole spices has the freshest taste possible – and limits the sugar content to give your customers a more authentic (and healthful) chai experience.
Give it a (Health) Kick!
Because chai is made from tea and spices, it offers several unique and healthful properties. For example, Pixie Mate makes a chai concentrate made with yerba mate tea. Yerba mate is a South American tea loaded with anti-oxidants and vitamins and minerals that also happens to provide a unique energy buzz. Many of your customers trying to kick the caffeine habit have switched to yerba mate for its energizing effects without the jitters and nervous energy of coffee and many more will switch once they learn about the amazing health benefits of yerba mate. Additionally, the aromatic spices in chai have long been used to promote relaxation and health. Ginger, for instance, aids digestion, and cinnamon has been known to support good circulation and breathing. For health and diet-conscious customers, chai concentrates are usually also available in decaf (ruby roobois tea is used as the base), sugar-free (with stevia), and green tea (tons of anti-oxidants).
Keep it Real!
Make organic and Fair Trade Certified products (chai, coffee, and tea) an overall part of your shops marketing message and create customer loyalty, all while doing your part to promote a sustainable planet!
Year Round Flavor
Many shop owners count on chai sales slowing during the hot summer months – and it is true that there is nothing quite like a steaming hot chai on a crisp, cool, autumn afternoon. However, chai’s versatility makes it a great drink for any weather. Try some of these recipes below and keep your chai sales hot all year long!

Marketing and Promotion
Set up passive sampling with an airpot full of chai or a mate latte. Use POS to educate your customers about the seductive, soothing qualities of chai and the health effects of yerba mate (POS is available from Barista Pro Shop). Don’t forget - while signage and POS can tell a story, nothing advertises like a motivated and enthusiastic employee. Take the time to train your baristas about the drinks they prepare and they will become your greatest salesperson!
