Flavors of the Season

Everyone has their expectations when it comes to what flavors they want to enjoy during the holiday season. Pumpkin Pie Lattes, Peppermint Mochas & Egg Nog Lattes are what customers have come to expect as "standards" at any cafe throughout the holiday season.

I often hear people say they want to be different than the 'big chains'. So they think eliminating one or all of those expected drinks is a way to differentiate themselves from the competition. I've seen this happen & seen it fail miserably! It is like telling your relatives there will be no turkey or pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving dinner! No one wants to miss their favorite flavors, and you do not want to miss out on those significant sales.

Menuing your own new holiday drink is a better idea to differentiate your store from the competition instead of eliminating seasonal favorites. Any flavor combination that you and your baristas like will usually work well, especially if it conforms to the general drink profile of your shop; however, if you don't sell many mochas, offering a peppermint mocha may not be the best option. Whenever you can, it's a good idea to make your signature drink available to the sugar free crowd as well.

Try creating your own concoction by mixing some of the Holiday Flavors & the Hot flavors below. If you mix too many flavors together, the drink will become a sweet mess of unrecognizable flavors. Instead, try using a sauce or syrup as your main flavor and then accent it with another flavor. I find that using a sauce gives a good base & mouth feel to a drink, then flavored syrup adds depth & dimension which makes your drink memorable.
