Q & A with a BPS Owner: Jay Weller

Friday July 23, 2010

Q: When did you start BPS?  What's been your role in the company?Jay

A:  We started BPS in January of 1994—and I’ve been here since the beginning.  I’ve baked, delivered, sold, cold called, done trade shows, and everything in between.

Q: Where did you grow up?  Where did you go to school?

A:  I grew up in Amherst, NH.  I graduated from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA with a B.A. in Economics.

Q: What do you like most about your job/BPS?

A:  I really enjoy the “game” of business.  Obviously I like that the business puts food in our dogs’ bowls, but beyond making a living, I enjoy the strategy that’s involved.  I’m definitely a “numbers guy”.  I also really like getting to work with other independent business owners.

Q: Coffee beverage?

A:  When it’s great, I prefer espresso.

Q: Non Coffee beverage?

A:  Very hoppy IPA’s and Bombay Sapphire

Q: What’s your favorite band or type of music?

A:  I can listen to a lot of different things (don’t really understand Country), but most of the time you’ll find me listening to Classic Rock.  My favorite bands are U2 and Guns n’ Roses.

Q: What do you like to do when you’re not working?  Hobbies?

A:  Jennifer and I have 6 dogs which keep us running around.  Jennifer also does a lot of fostering for the Larimer Humane Society—I think the largest the pack has been at the house is 15 dogs when she was fostering a mom with her litter of puppies.  I’ve really gotten into photography the last couple of years and I love getting up into the Colorado Mountains to look for Moose to photograph.

Q: Kids?

A:  We don’t have any kids, just the dogs.  Between the dogs and having the 2 locations for our business about 2,000 miles apart (Colorado and New Hampshire), I’m just not sure where we’d find time for kids!

Q: Favorite Meal?

Anything at BLT Steak with Jennifer

Q: Team?

A:  Boston Red Sox and Denver Broncos

Q: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you be?

A:  Wow.  I’ve been really fortunate to live in some fantastic places.  New England is really special.  I enjoyed living in Pennsylvania for four years and I love Colorado.  If I was forced to choose, I think I’d buy a boat and live on the ocean so I could move all over the place (we’d need to get some smaller dogs though).

Q: What’s product would you recommend from the BPS catalog and why?

A:  I really like the cherry pies that we make at BPS Bakery.  Besides those, I’d have to recommend Jet smoothies.  If you’re a consumer, they’re easy to make and they taste great.  If you’re a café, people love the flavor, they can really diversify your menu and I think they’re the best non-coffee product in the warehouse.

Q: Anything else you would like to add?

A:  I really appreciate everything that our terrific staff does for us, and I’m thankful for all the customers and vendors we’ve worked with over the years.  My job is a lot of fun and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
