2011 Regional Barista Competition Update

Thursday December 2, 2010

It’s hard to believe that the 2011 Barista Competition season kicks off in just a few weeks!  The North West Regional Barista Competition (NWRBC) will be held in Tacoma, WA on Jan 27-30.  The NWRBC will showcase baristas from WA, OR, AK, ID, MT, and WY.  We wish our WY friends (formerly Mountain Region competitors) best of luck!

Hot off the presses is the announcement that the North Central Regional Barista Competition (NCRBC) will be held in conjunction with Coffee Fest Chicago in February.  Baristas from ND, SD, NE, MN, IA, WI, IL, IN, and MI will compete Feb 18-20.

So far, these are the only confirmed competitions.  However, based on last year’s announcement of competition restructuring, proposed months are: South Central (KS, MO, OK, TX, AR, LA, and MS) will be held in Jan, South West (HI, CA, NV, AZ, UT, NM, and our favorite CO ;) will take place in Feb, South East (KY, VA, TN, NC, SC, AL, GA, FL, and DC) in Feb, and the North East (OH, WV, DE, PA, NJ, NY, CT, RI, MA, VT, ME, MD, and our other fave NH) in March.  I think it’s safe to assume that these times are tentative and definitely subject to change.

The United States Barista Championship will once again be held at the SCAA’s show, The Event.  The Event will take place in Houston, April 28 – May 1.  Registration for The Event is now open.

If you’re thinking about competing this year (and if you are, I hope you’re already in the prep phase!), prepare to shell out a few more dollars.  The entry fee for competitors is $150 for BGA (Barista Guild of America) members, and $300 for non-members.  Membership to the BGA costs $45, so still a better deal than the $300.

We’re excited for the season to start and hope to see you there (competing, cheering on, volunteering, judging, or just ‘spectating’)!
