Traveling the World with Two Leaves Tea Company
Friday January 17, 2014 // By Matthew Moseley
Explore a World of Tantalizing Flavor
As the sun breaks the crest of the Himalaya mountains and illuminates a lush forest of sal and oak in Darjeeling, torid rapids rush through the banks of the Brahmaputra river in Assam, while in Sri Lanka water plummets 863 ft creating an explosion of splashing water at the base of the Bambarakanda Falls. These immaculate nature backdrops resound of exotic wildlife from the roar of a red panda to the grunt of a one-horned rhinoceros or even a howl of the golden langur. You’re immersed in a wild landscape; on an expedition into the foreign and unknown.
Not only do Darjeeling, Assam, and Sri Lanka act as home to some of the world’s most breath-taking scenery and tropical creatures; these places also host the origins of the world’s second most consumed beverage tea! Just like it’s birthplace, tea is full of exoctic sensations from flavors to aromas.
Tea: Blooming Buds and Health
Tea is not only diverse in the range of flavors that it can exude, but also the health benefits it possesses. This unique beverage which comes from a single plant, the camellia sinensis, has been shown to contain a wide array of compounds beneficial to promote health and wellness. Though one plant is responsible for providing tea, processing the tea leaves through unique methods creates the tea varietals: black, green and white. However, Rooibos or red tea is actually not even a true tea, and for this reason some refer to them as tisanes not teas.
So, how can tea help you? Well, like coffee, tea can come in either fully caffeinated (although not as highly caffeinated), lightly caffeinated, and caffeine-free. Which means it can be a fuel source for you or just a relaxing beverage to enjoy. Further, despite a common myth that all caffeinated drinks cause dehydration; unless excessive quantities, or high concentrations, of caffeine are present tea can be as hydrating as water itself! Further, with the help of polyphenols, a natural compound in tea, caffeine actually causes an individual to use more energy and oxidizes fat quicker in turn burning more calories, aiding in weight loss and maintaining a healthy body weight.
In addition, tea is helpful in promoting a strong immune system and reducing risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease. This is because tea is so high in antioxidants and polyphenols. While you’re sitting back sipping your delicious beverage, the compounds in the tea are hard at work defending your body.
