The Tip Jar- Better Brewing

Saturday January 23, 2010

I tried a new tecPress and sludgehnique with my French press this morning.  I skimmed off the grounds resting on top before plunging.  According to James Hoffman (2007 World Barista Champion and an owner of Square Mile Coffee Roasters), this skimming will help cut down on the amount of fine grinds left behind in the coffee and result in less ‘sludge’ in the bottom of your cup.  It worked!  Don’t get me wrong, there was still a little mud resting at the bottom, but the mouthfeel was much improved (not so heavy or gritty).  Check out this website for more tips on an array of brewing methods.  See a brewing method you don’t recognize?  Consider investing in some new equipment (many are very economical and easy to use) and enjoy the pursuit of the perfect cup!
