Sweeten the Seasons with Sauces

Flavors are not all created equally. This is because more than just flavor affects how we experience taste. What if I told you that sight and the sensation of touch can have a strong influence on how we taste flavors. Well it’s the truth! Whether it’s the color or the texture; how something is presented plays a large role in the overall consumption experience. Consider eating a watermelon flavored steak. That tender, juicy consistency is no longer pleasant when paired with the sweet, refreshing taste of watermelon, instead of a hearty and savory flavor that is normally present in beef. So, what does any of this have to do with the specialty coffee industry? Well, have you ever wondered why so many leading brands of syrups also make sauces, and they will even offer a sauce and a syrup in the same flavor?
You’re not alone. It doesn’t seem to make much sense, why have two products that are the same flavor and both used to sweetened a finished recipe? Well, try making one of your typical recipes utilizing syrup with a sauce substituted in its place. What do think? It’s very different; isn’t it? This drink becomes thick and creamy; making for a more substantial and heavy feeling drink that results in a decadent drink abounding with creamy flavors. This new consistency really transforms the drink from something that’s sweet into something more like a complete dessert experience. That’s what makes sauce so complimentary to typical mochas and lattes that become so popular during the cold, winter weather months. And don’t think you’re out of luck just because you have to avoid sugars. You can find excellent sugar-free sauces from all of the top brands that make for an equally indulgent drink that will sure to fool your taste buds into thinking you’ve given in and sipped down some sugar.
So, other than making your drink thicker and more creamy; what else can sauce do for you where syrups just fail? Well sauces are also great for garnishing beverages in a way that increases the visual presentation; in effect enhancing the overall drinking experience. Sauces are great for a few different reasons. First, sauces are perfect for drizzling over top whipped cream. This not makes for a more visually dynamic drink; it also, results in a premium beverage. Second, sauces can also be used to create designs on top of your drinks similar to etched latte art. Not sure why you would opt for a 12oz squeeze bottle, when you’re already getting a 64oz bottle and pump? Well, now you do; these squeeze bottles not only make it easier for you to draw out designs but their compact size also makes them easier to store in refrigeration. Refrigeration?!? Don’t worry, sauces do NOT need to refrigerated (not even after being opened) for quality, but chilling sauces will increase the thickness making it easier to manage while drizzling out artistic designs. Third, sauces make for a great way to enjoy seasonal flavors that rely on spicy sweetness. In the case of syrups, spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg can produce an overpowering flavor that almost quenchs the sweetness. When you use a sauce these flavors result in a much more balanced flavor profile.
