Tea Time

Monday October 25, 2010

http://www.flickr.com/photos/naama/24497360/It’s been a blustery morning in Colorado today, made even more dramatic by the flurry of autumn colored leaves.  Sprinkles of rain have been falling and snow clouds are looming over the foothills.  The change of the season has definitely arrived!  I’m sipping on a piping hot Numi Chocolate Puerh Tea Latté, and feeling cozy while watching the weather outside.  Inspired by the weather and my latté, I decided I’d spend a little time on tea today.

We currently carry three lines of tea: Mighty Leaf, Numi, and Novus.  Mighty Leaf and Novus bags are both the see through silk variety (Novus is pyramid shaped), while Numi tea is packaged in a biodegradable paper bag.  The silk bags make an impressive display for brewing tea (tea, herbs and flowers are visible), and serve as a good alternative to brewing loose leaf.  All three lines offer a tasty cup, with Numi and Mighty Leaf offering up a larger selection to choose from.  Numi and Mighty Leaf also have a lot of fun gift items like flowering teas and assorted tea tins.

Tea Facts:

• An 8 oz cup of Green Tea contains approx. 20mg caffeine, Black Tea 45mg, Brewed Coffee 60-100mg (depending on roast and varietal), and a Double Espresso 45-100mg (depending on roast and varietal.

• After water, tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world.

• All teas are made from the same species of plant.  The leaves are processed differently to produce white, green, and black teas.  Puerh tea is a post-fermented tea.

• Proposed health benefits of tea include:  anti-cancer properties due to levels of antioxidants, prevention of coronary heart disease and diabetes, improves immune function, helps prevent dental decay, etc.

• The largest producers of tea are the People's Republic of ChinaIndiaKenyaSri Lanka, and Turkey.

In case you were wondering how to make a Numi Chocolate Puerh Latté (16 oz):

Steep 1 bag Numi Chocolate Puerh Tea in 4 oz of hot water for 3-5 minutes.  Add a sweetener if desired (I tried out Sweetbird’s Cane Sugar Syrup today.  I also like Torani Cupcake or Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Syrups) and stir.  Add 12 oz steamed milk.  Enjoy and happy fall!
