Introducing Oatly
Wednesday October 25, 2017 // By Dana Schlingman
An Unconventional Oat Milk & An Unconventional Interview
...with the Oatly website
Hello Oatly, Tell Us a Little Bit About Yourself:
“We know how it sounds. Tall, blond, beautiful, hard to get, extremely liberal with no sense of attachment or responsibility whatsoever. Sorry to disappoint you, that’s just not us. We are the other Swede – somewhat boring, super practical, painfully honest, notoriously hard working and independent not because we don’t want to be social but merely because we want to have the right to say what we think and do what we think is right. If we wanted to be one of those gigantic food corporations or have some old man behind a wooden desk in a tall building make decisions for us, we would all quit our jobs and go work for an old man behind a wooden desk in a tall building making gigantic food company decisions for us. Don’t hold your breath.”
Wait back-up, so where are you from?
“Sweden”
Oh I get it… Tall, blond, beautiful, hard to get…
When were you born?
“back in the 1990s”
So some might say you are a millennial? I’ve heard that you belong to the Post-Milk Generation, can you speak to that?
“Today, the concept of producing a drink directly from oats instead of first feeding oats to a cow and letting the cow process them into milk is an option but back when we started in the 1990s most people thought we were totally crazy.
We believe we should eat stuff that we can grow. Our goal is to always deliver products that have maximum nutritional value and minimal environmental impact. No GMOs. One more time. No GMOs. We strive to produce the cleanest, most responsible products on the market and are continually looking for better ways to make our products even better.
We are not a perfect company, not even close, but our intentions are true. We promise to be a good company which means that our drive to help people upgrade their lives always comes before the reckless pursuit of profit. We would like to be judged by the good we do and not just the pretty words we say. We hope to make the food industry a more honest place by declaring to be totally transparent in everything we do.”
Skipping the cow all together seems pretty smart - where’d you come up with that idea?
“Oatly is based on Swedish research from Lund University. The company’s patented enzyme technology copies nature’s own process and turns fiber rich oats into nutritional liquid food that is perfectly designed for humans.”
You keep bringing up your Swedish roots - they sound pretty significant? Care to elaborate?
“Everything we make, we make on Swedish oats. If you are wondering what makes Swedish oats so special, the answer is very simple. They grow strong and tall in the Nordic climate, which is a crazy mix of long sunny days (in the summer) mixed with short periods of intense rain. Moreover, many of the nasty pesticides that are used on oats in the rest of Europe are totally forbidden in Sweden.
The company operates out of the southern region of Sweden with Headquarters in Malmö and our Production & Development Center situated in Landskrona. The Oatly brand is available in more than 20 countries throughout Europe, Asia, and now North America.”
While I’ve got you talking about the company would you mind summing up the vision or mission?
"Our sole purpose as a company is to make it easy for people to turn what they eat and drink into personal moments of healthy joy without recklessly taxing the planet’s resources in the process."
Awesome.
Or, should I say Oat-some.
Thank you so much for posting your beliefs, story and aspirations so openly for me to shamelessly and directly quote here today.
