More Information About Two Leaves And A Bud Matcha

If you’re like me and you’re a little late to the matcha party, here’s what you need to know about this powerful superfood...

What is Matcha?
In essence, matcha is green tea. It is made from shade-grown (Camellia sinensis) tea leaves that have been air dried and stoneground into a fine powder. Historically this powder was then blended with hot water to make Japanese green tea. Japanese monks drank it to heighten their concentration and to help them remain alert during their meditative practices.

While many still prepare their matcha traditionally, today it is also combined with a variety of other ingredients to craft lattes, gourmet confections and iced beverages.

Unlike other forms of steeped green tea, the matcha leaves are never removed from the final beverage. Rather the entire meticulously tended tea leaf is consumed along with 100% of its nutrients. In terms of antioxidants, one cup of matcha is roughly the equivalent of 10 cups of regularly brewed green tea (depending on the grade and quality of the matcha). Plus matcha contains a whole host of other healthy nutrients.
