Bhakti Chai
Friday September 28, 2018 // By Dana Schlingman
“In Sanskrit, Bhakti means devotion. We are a mission driven company steeped in sustainable practices and devotion through social action.” -- Bhakti Chai
Origin of Bhakti
It all began in 2002 when Bhakti Chai founder Brook Eddy traveled to India. Interested in the Bhakti social justice movement, she wanted to learn more. While there, she fell in love with the bold mentality that everyone has the responsibility to contribute to the community and the bold, spicy chai that daily brought communities together. She found that in sharing a cup of chai with families that she met, they were also sharing their zest for life and their dedication to the ritual of taking time during the day to drink in the moment.
After returning to Colorado, Brook began brewing her own chai - experimenting with spices and including fresh pressed ginger to add that extra zing she remembered from her trip. Friends and neighbors soon became customers and fervent fans of her chai and the social action principles behind her new venture: Bhakti Chai.
Today Bhakti Chai is devoted to being bold -- with their products, their business practices and with the way that they give back -- in order to live up to their founding philosophy and create a lasting positive impact.
Products
This artisan craft brewed chai fuses vibrant flavors from the highest quality, sustainably sourced ingredients: antioxidant rich Fair Trade Certified black tea, organic ginger and milled spices. Unlike other chai producers, Bhakti uses fresh pressed ginger rather than processed ginger powders in order to ensure that their products contain all of the root’s inherent nutritional benefits and rich spice. Currently BPS offers both of their shelf stable blends:
• Bhakti Original Chai Concentrate
• Bhakti Chai Unsweetened Chai Concentrate
Non GMO Verified | Fair Trade | Carrageenan Free | Gluten Free | Vegan | BPA Free
Practices
“We at Bhakti feel honored to know that the premium we pay on our ingredients — whether it’s Fair Trade Certified tea, organic ginger or Non-GMO Verified soy — is establishing a standard of self-sufficiency on a global level. We are impacting today’s land owners and entrepreneurs which will lead to a new generation of educated and passionate community leaders. In addition, from zero waste manufacturing to sustainable packaging, Bhakti Chai incorporates conscious practices into every aspect of its business.” -- Bhakti Chai
Non-GMO Project Verified: Bhakti Chai is commitmented to sourcing sustainable, all-natural products from regional farmers and has received third-party endorsement from the Non-GMO Project. All Bhakti Chai products are Non-GMO Project Verified.
Certified B Corp: Bhakti is one of a growing number of businesses with Certified B Corporation status. Benefit Corporations (B Corps) are businesses with strong triple bottom line (people, planet, profit) values that voluntarily undergo a yearly audit to assess measurable impact in identified areas, such as reducing ecological footprint and investing in the community. Bhakti Chai meets rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.
Zero Waste: As a Green Star Business Member, Bhakti drives to reduce the packaging from suppliers and/or make sure any necessary packaging is recyclable or reusable. They also hope to find a secondary beneficial use for the pulp extractions that are created during the brewing process. Perhaps most importantly, Bhakti would like to make sure that all employees are educated and trained on what goes where to minimalize landfill waste and maximize responsible waste sorting habits.
Fair Trade Certified: Bhakti Chai’s black tea is produced according to standards that enable sustainable livelihoods for small-scale farmers and farm workers in the developing world.
GITA: Give Inspire Take Action
In Sanskrit, GITA means “Share Your Story.” Through their GITA program, Bhakti brings awareness and support to small projects making a huge difference in the global community. The goal is to give causes and bystanders the tools they need to share their stories of social consciousness in order to empower anyone and everyone to affect change.
